I won’t lie; it’s tough to compete with the amount of pieces that come and go through large shops. At times I’ve been envious but then I realized shops of that size would find it more difficult do what I do and love (at least to the same degree) which is, work directly with the customer and have them be a part of the entire custom process. I am able to take the time to have in-depth consultations with my customers that include home visits and phone calls whenever necessary. Additionally, as a smaller shop I don’t have the space to stock generic “stock” items so each piece of wood, hardware, stain, finish etc. is hand selected and custom ordered for your particular piece. This ensures a unique, one of a kind piece just for you. Furthermore, being a smaller custom shop provides me the time to pay close attention to details, think through a piece and suggest ideas/changes as the project begins to take shape. Large shops can build beautiful pieces however the one-to-one communication and attention to detail that Reef Woodworks provides would be tough for them to match. Customers are not rushed through any part of the project and no project or order is too small. Regardless of size or intricacy, every customer's project gets the same care, attention to detail and hand crafted custom quality that it deserves.
How I started...
Woodworking has always been part of my life for as long as I can remember. From sticks and twine to make a bow and arrow, to a wall clock in high school shop, to live edge tables with traditional wood joinery and figured bowtie inlays. Before beginning to build furniture and decor full time, I had a career as a teacher. Over the years I began to incorporate woodworking into my science program to teach students the basic fundamentals of tool use while building structures to test various scientific theories and concepts. I found myself spending a lot of time thinking about designs and techniques that I could implement into my teaching and started creating functional pieces of furniture for my home on my spare time. I started gaining interest from my friends and peers to design and build pieces for them. I decided to take a year off from teaching to explore woodworking in more detail and see if I could build quality pieces that I would be proud of. That one year turned into two, then three and the custom orders kept coming in. Deciding to give up the consistency and security of teaching to start a custom furniture making business was a little scary. However, the joy that comes from designing, creating and delivering a piece of custom furniture to a happy customer made the risk worth it. Since starting Reef Woodworks I’ve never looked back!
